Proper sitting posture can make or break your day. Your posture can directly affect your mood, health, and productivity. When the majority of Americans currently sit an average of 13 hours a day, it’s time to speak up and sit up.
Are We Sitting on the Truth?
The truth is that good posture is essential to our overall health. Hence, how we stand and carry our bodies around affects our muscles, joints, bones, breathing, digestion, appearance, and more.
However, proper sitting posture can be even more detrimental. Notably, this is especially true for those of us who spend more than three-quarters of our awake-time sitting on a chair, couch, and/or vehicle seat.
Think about it. You sit at work. Same, you sit at lunch. Next, you sit on the train, bus, or in your car. Finally, you sit watching TV, reading, gaming, or checking email.
Getting up every 20 to 30 minutes to take a brief walk helps. And, exercising daily is certainly beneficial. But, what’s happening to your body while it’s sitting for all those other long hours throughout the day? Rather, without proper sitting posture, you may run into some problems…
Examples of a Bad Sitter
Here are some examples of not-so proper sitting posture. Check to see if you are guilty of any below:
- Slouching, hunching shoulders
- Poking your chin forward
- Curving your back into a “C” shape
- Crossing your legs
- Holding your head to one side
- Sitting with your knees higher or lower than your hips
- Resting your weight on your elbows
- Falling asleep in a chair without head support
- Sitting in the same position for over 30 continuous minutes
If you recognize participating in any of the above, you’re probably in pain somewhere. Due to sitting in a bad position for any period of time places stress on your muscles and joints. No wonder you have a neck ache, your shoulders are tight, and your lower back is sore!
Don’t worry. So you’re not an expert at proper sitting posture—yet! The good news is that you can fix it. Add a few mindful proper sitting posture tips, turn them into habit, and you’ll be in ship-shape in no time!
Proper Sitting Posture Points
Whether you’re on your way to work, already there, or just hanging out at home, there are several ways you can practice good sitting:
1) Sit with your back straight and your shoulders back (but down and relaxed). Your bottom should be all the way to the back of your chair.
2) Feel your sitz bones (your bony butt bones) when you rock slightly from side to side. This will force your pelvis to be in alignment with your shoulders. As a result, it will also create the proper, natural curve in your lower back.
3) Your knees should be at even level with your hips.

5) Your hips, knees, and ankles should be at right angles.
6) Distribute your weight evenly on both hips.
7) Keep your chin tucked in and parallel to the floor. Raise your book or your screen to eye level to maintain proper sitting posture.
8) Keep your head in the middle of your shoulders.
Keep In Mind…
Practice these proper sitting postures when you’re driving, too. At first, it may feel odd or even uncomfortable. Soon thereafter, you’ll notice quickly when you start slumping, or crossing your legs, or leaning to one side more than the other.
Why Does it Matter?
For one thing, having good posture makes you look more attractive. Internally, however, sitting up straight helps decrease placing strain on your muscles. In addition, it also prevents fatigue because you’re using your muscles more efficiently.
