More Good News About Red Wine

If you enjoy a nice glass of wine, it gets more exciting every time a new study comes out touting its benefits. Get ready to cheer once again. This time red wine may prove to correct hormonal imbalances.

Red Wine, No Sour Grapes

Besides its deliciousness to so many of our senses, red wine has shown to deliver several positive health benefits. It’s actually the compound found in the grape skins, which is naturally beneficial. It’s called resveratrol.

Resveratrol is an antioxidant. It helps cells in plants, insects, animals, and humans defend against disease.

Women and Wine

In a study just published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, the authors wrote that resveratrol intake can help restore estrogen levels.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a significant condition from which many women suffer. In fact, there are currently five to six million women in the US who’ve been stricken with this disease. Too much testosterone is produced, causing a hormonal imbalance, leading to PCOS.

PCOS is a leading cause of infertility in women.

In This Study…

Researchers conducted a double-blind test having some of the female participants take resveratrol, while the others were given a placebo. At the end of the experiment, those in the supplement-taking taking group showed to have a 23% percent drop in testosterone levels. (The placebo gals had less than a 3% decrease in testosterone levels.)

What This Means…

As further studies are conducted, it may prove that resveratrol can help moderate estrogen levels and hormone balancing. Hence, it can be used as a treatment for PCOS—and infertility caused by PCOS.

I’ll Drink to That!

Consuming extra red wine won’t necessarily provide you the amount of resveratrol with which researchers are experimenting. (In fact, overconsumption of alcohol can be dangerous or deadly.) However, one glass of red wine per day, can offer benefits far and wide throughout your body.

Many Resveratrol Benefits

Another astounding discovery about resveratrol is that it may help treat diabetes.

Resveratrol:

  • prevents insulin resistance
  • reduces oxidative stress in cells, which prevents premature aging and promotes longevity
  • protects the lining of arteries, improving blood flow
  • supports brain cells, improving mental function
  • prevents cancer cell replication, which can suppress the spread of cancer

Before taking supplements, always read up on them and discuss with your medical advisor. Cheers to the benefits of the adult red juice!

An Ancient Superfood You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

There’s an incredible Superfood that’s been around for thousand of years. You may not know about “horse gram” yet, but you will want to!

No Horsing Around

Horse gram is actually a nickname. And it will soon make sense why. It’s the most protein-rich legume in existence. Racehorses for centuries have been fed this lentil because it’s low in fat, abundant in complex carbs, and offers maximum physical performance from its nutrient-dense composition.

Sounds too good to be true? Indian cuisine will tell you this is the real thing—and for people too! Horse gram in Tamil is called Kollu, and in Hindi, it’s labeled as Kulthi. You can find this Superfood under those monikers at health-conscious markets as well as Indian specialty food stores.

A List of A-mazing

Aside from the health benefits for animals and humans, horse gram is a practical, beneficial, plant-based food, which can be easily grown, maintained, harvested, and profit the earth. In this climate of uncertain weather and crop conditions, Kollu requires very little water to sustain itself. This lentil is virtually drought-resistant.

Where to continue? There are so many positive health components to this organic food; it’s tough to decide which ones are the most outstanding. As far as nutritional content, horse gram ranks high in protein, iron, and calcium. It’s low in sodium and lipid content. It digests very slowly. This is amazing for those who want long-lasting energy, not a lot of sugar and not a lot of fat. Sounds like a gift from the heavens.

Fancy terms like polyphenols and flavanoids are good words. Horse gram is wealthy with these—they are antioxidants—and may help thwart cancer.

A Bean for a Human Be-ing

Horse gram, because of its phenol content, can attack fat. Isn’t that great news? Additionally, it can lower blood sugar after a meal. This is incredible information for those identified as diabetic or obese. (Horse gram slows down carb digestion—thus reducing insulin resistance.)

CanaGel Melts

If you can get beyond the name and the taste, horse gram will work you wonders.

In fact, there are countless, incredibly delicious recipes using Kollu. You just need to find a palatable way to ingest this Superfood, just as you had to when you first discovered Quinoa and Kale. Remember those days?

Medicinal Properties

Horse gram has been used for countless centuries to combat the common cold. That sounds nice—and tame. But check this out: Eastern medical texts use horse gram for relief (and cure) of asthma and bronchitis. It’s a natural expectorant.

Get this too: Horse gram can help disintegrate kidney stones. It also helps with other urinary conditions. How about heart disease? Yes! Check that one off. That’s a biggie. Jaundice? No problem. Horse gram can cure that. How about high cholesterol? Done! “Silly” other ailments like conjunctivitis, hemorrhoids, bad gas, and PMS have also been squelched by ingesting horse gram.

If this isn’t a Superfood, then what really is?

There are many yummy recipes you can find online that incorporate horse gram. Even if the name turns you off, don’t neigh at its health benefits. Yes, I went there. Next, I’m off to the market to get some horse gram to make a delectable, curry soup. How will you incorporate your horse gram tonight?

Superfood? It’s the Gift that Keeps on Giving…

Really a Superfood? It’s not unusual to hear someone declare, “Garlic is really good for you!” Yes, it is. But, here are a myriad of reasons why garlic is an incredible gift to our health.

Herb or Veggie?

Garlic is actually a member of the lily family, which starts as a bulb. It’s similar to onions and shallots, which are considered vegetables. Garlic also has leaves giving it further veggie credence. However, a herb is defined as a vegetable cultivated for medicinal or spiritual values. Hence, garlic must be a herb as well!

Good Stinky Breath and Skin

Garlic can be associated with bad breath, especially if you haven’t eaten any lately. Allyl methyl sulfide (ALM) is the compound that gives off the pungent odor when we eat it. During digestion, the sulfur passes into our blood stream.

The sulfur in garlic makes up vital amino acids used to create protein for cells, tissues, hormones, and antibodies. This is one reason why garlic helps boost our immune system.

When we sweat, the stinky ALM is emitted from our skin. This is beneficial because it helps release toxins. It also repels many types of insects, including some mosquitoes.

Beneficial Cancer-Repelling Compounds

Besides sulfur, garlic contains flavonoids, selenium, oligosaccarides, and arginine. All of these compounds have been linked to decreasing cancer-risk. Many fall into the antioxidant category.

Consumption of garlic has shown to decrease the risk of esophageal, stomach, prostate, breast, and colon cancers. In fact, most studies show the higher the quantity consumed, the lower the risk of developing the cancers mentioned earlier. Some components in garlic have proven to reduce the size and slow the growth of malignant tumors.

Immune Booster

T-Cells are produced in the thymus. The thymus is responsible for creating armies of white blood cells, which help fight infection in the body. Garlic has been shown to stimulate T-cells.

Studies done at the Mayo Clinic show garlic contains properties that help to boost the body’s levels of antioxidants, which work as a defense system against viruses.

Garlic consumption via food source or supplement is recommended for taming yeast infections. It is considered a powerful anti-fungal (along with Oregano, FYI.) Garlic also offers anti-bacterial properties. Some parasites and bacteria become defenseless against the chemical compounds in garlic.

Heart Lover

Garlic has proven to lower bad-cholesterol levels when eaten/taken on a daily basis. Additionally, studies have shown that garlic helps keep the aorta flexible. As we age, the blood vessel managing blood pressure can stiffen. Garlic can help keep your heart’s aorta from aging prematurely or from working too hard.

Clearly, the health benefits of garlic are immense. The best part, however, may be how it tastes mixed with a teeny bit of butter on a warm, just-out-of-the-oven, slice of healthy bread. Yum…

How To Choose The Best Probiotic

What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are living bacteria and yeasts that happen to be great for the digestive system.  There are millions of good and bad bacteria, named microbiota or more commonly, gut flora, living in the digestive system.  Digestive health needs to be balanced and that’s when probiotics can help.  Sounding like something from a 1970’s horror movie like ‘The Andromeda Strain’, probiotics are a health boosting microorganism, living inside of the body’s digestion tract.  In recent years, the public have invested in the industry, which was worth a whopping 46 billion in 2017.

Probiotics have the potential to assist the immune system, improve digestion and possibly aid weight loss.  Dr. Francois-Pierre Martin, Jeremy Nicholson, and colleagues from the Imperial College London, Nestlé Research Centre in Switzerland, and Uppsala University in Sweden were fascinated by the response of the body’s metabolism, once probiotic food was ingested.  Using two groups of mice, one group ingested probiotics and the other did not.  The doctors discovered that the mice who had been given the probiotic were metabolically different to those who had not been treated because of the breakdown product found in the probiotic mice’s urine, liver, and feces.  They experienced changes of bacteria in the gut that had an effect on the way their liver processed fat, suggesting that probiotic may help with weight loss.  Microbiotas are also thought to be the link between health and sickness, with researchers suggesting that cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, and the immune system may all be affected and possibly controlled my these organisms.

Where To Find Probiotics

Probiotics can be found in supplements or in food that has bacterial fermentation with lactic acid.  An obvious example of this would be yogurt which contains live bacteria.  If recently prescribed antibiotics, a doctor may suggest these kinds of yogurts, to replace the good bacteria (Lactobacillus Acidophilus) in the gut, decreasing the side effects from taking the medicines.  The good probiotics help with various ailments, some of which include, yeast infections, diabetes and bad cholesterol.  There are many probiotic yogurts and drinks availablle in local stores, here are just a few:

  • Kefir
  • Kombucha (fermented tea combined with a culture of yeast and bacteria)
  • Activia yogurt
  • Emergen-C
  • DanActive Probiotic Dallies
  • Miso
  • Pickles

What Are The Types Of Probiotics?

Out of the many types of probiotic, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are the most common.  There are also numerous combinations of probiotics in supplements, called multi-probiotics.  The choice of priobiotic depends heavily on which illness or health problem being treated.  If the issue is a little more complex, for example a digestive problem, visiting a doctor and obtaining a prescription would be beneficial.  There are many on the market, but plenty of research is available online, to give some ideas of which provide the most benefits.  Some suggestions include:

  • VSL (labeled Probiotic Medical Food): the highest available concentration of good bacteria.  Depending on the amount required, the box is labeled #1-3, with #3 being the highest, and it is commonly prescribed to treat IBS or severe digestive issues.  Refrigeration is essential because many probiotics are heat sensitive, which can kill the active ingredients
  • Multibionta: helps digestive tract and the immune system.
  • Prescript-Assist: used to help with allergies, gas, constipation.  Replenishes healthy GI Microflora and refrigeration is not required.
  • Hyper biotics PRO-15: time release tablets ideal for digestive health and to support a healthy immune system.
Not Your Average Probiotic
Not Your Average Probiotic

Doctors advise that many products don’t contain a high enough count of probiotic, with 99% of the product being killed off by stomach acids, before progressing through the gut.  Knowing the products and getting advice by a professional could save a lot of money.  Probiotics should not be taken by people who have late stage cancer, are undergoing chemotherapy, or have a compromised immune system.

So after the next health assessment, consider probiotics, it may just help keep that good bacteria in check.

How To Lose Belly Fat For Women

What happened to the days where skin used to ping back into shape and eating a burger with fries had little effect on the circumference of the pants?  Sad to say those days are long gone and the reality of shifting the middle jiggle is a living nightmare.  In desperation to return to the leaner side of the tummy bulge, liposuction and even fat freezing has become popular.  However, quick fixes will not change that spare tire without some heavy duty planning and determination.  Get ready to tighten that belt and put those high wasted mom jeans back in the closet.  Warning: This belly-off advice may lead to dancing through the veggie isles whilst ignoring and laughing at the candy section.

THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT

Studies show that belly fat has a link to genetics and depending on the body makeup, governs where the weight is stored or lost.  Women going through menopause are also prone to obtaining belly fat, due to the drop in estrogen levels. The fat dispenses from the buttocks and thighs, and it heads straight for the belly.  Visceral is the harmful kind of fat that is stored in the abdomen and wraps itself around the internal organs.  This fat should be taken seriously as it may cause the following problems:

Levels of a protein called Fibroblast growth factor-2, are found in visceral fat, where the FGF2 has the potential to stimulate these cells into tumors.  According to the Washington University School Of Medicine, belly fat can affect the outcome of women surviving kidney cancer.  Cancer sufferers who have substantial visceral fat have the average survival rate of 3 ½ years, compared to those who had little fat surviving 10 years or more.  There has not been any link of visceral fat and the length of cancer survival in men.

CONTROL THE BELLY FAT AND LOWER THE HEALTH RISK

According to research at the Mayo Clinic, a greater risk of death comes from having a large amount of belly fat, rather than a higher BMI (Body Mass Index).  So what to do to control this deadly fat?  First of all, there is no quick fix or fad diet that will solve this condition.  Lifestyle change and determination will not only help eliminate unsightly fat, but the dangerous fat too.

The following list will help keep the belly fat at bay:

  • Get rid of sugars. Choose whole fruits not fruit juices and view those fruits as sweet treats.  Eating too much sugar slows down or shuts off the lepton response, encouraging the feel of hunger.
  • Fat intake should consist of natural fats, like low fat plain yogurt, avocado, nuts, and olive oil.
  • Choose leaner proteins like salmon, skinless chicken, tofu, legumes.
  • Stay hydrated with water, to help detox and clear the body, as well as keep hunger under control.
  • Keep stress under control. Our body produces more cortisol when we are stressed and this hormone may influence weight gain.
  • Exercise at least twenty minutes a day can relieve stress, raise the heart rate and help combat the fat.  Try stomach crunches, leg lifts and weights for toning and high impact exercise to raise your heart rate (consult with a doctor or a professional before trying a new form of exercise).  Pilates or yoga are ideal for toning muscles, correcting posture and obtaining core strength.
  • Getting enough shut eye is extremely important, to keep hormones under control. Lack of sleep can activate ghrelin, which stimulates the appetite.
  • Drink less alcohol
  • Eat more soluble fiber like blackberries, avocados, split peas, black bean, lima beans broccoli, Brussel sprouts, oat bran, lentils, peas etc.

Vanity aside, belly fat is a potential killer and losing even a small amount of fat can lower the risk of disease and literally leave you feeling lighter.  With an unwavering mindset and strict rules, the spare tire can be lost at the side of the highway while racing away from health hazards to a new healthier and better body.

American Diet Invites Breast Cancer

Results from an in-depth screening of mammograms revealed frightening facts.  Women who ate a Western “American” style diet had a significantly greater risk of developing breast cancer.

Table for Two

A Western diet can be construed as a steak and potatoes-type meal, a club sandwich, a burger, and fries, or pizza with pepperoni, sausage, and extra cheese. All of these have something in common. They are especially high in fat, dairy, processed meats, and refined grains. They also lead to the development of denser breast tissue.

Denser breast tissue has been linked to increased risk of breast cancer. Sugary drinks and sweet desserts were added to the Western diet list as well. The study published this month in Obstetrics and Gynecology pointed out that overweight-obese women eating this type of diet are at great risk. Statistics point out that women eating the all-American diet as specified above have a 46 percent higher risk of developing breast cancer. Wow. That’s some information.

Making Adjustments

The study, (which consisted of data from over 3,500 women) also took into consideration other lifestyle factors. The results factored in adjustments such as age, those who smoked, drank alcohol, were in the midst of menopause, taking hormone treatments, and family history. Even yet, it still appeared that women who adhered more to a Western diet were more prone to show higher density tissue in their mammograms.

The women who adhered to a Mediterranean-type diet, however, did not show mammographic density. Less dense equals less cancer-risk. Perhaps it’s time to adjust our food choices…

What to Do

If you feel you or your family may be over-indulging in the American diet plan, and you want to make some changes, it can be done painlessly and almost invisibly. In fact, it can be surprisingly delicious and just as satisfying!

It’s just a matter of swapping out certain foods for other more healthy, fresh, unprocessed ones. Fast food (so sorry) will need to be out. But not to worry. There are other “fast” foods for you and your family that can come from a healthy place!

If foods like quinoa, chia, and kale intimidate you, that is completely understandable! But, learning how to cook them (or add them) is not a big deal, and they can taste super yummy. But this may be stepping ahead…

What to do now is eat more fish. Grill more veggies and eat more salads. (But don’t use traditional dressings!) Adding lemon, honey, and/or balsamic vinegar to your greens is a great replacement. Beans are a great side dish, too. Replace red meat with cage-free poultry, eggs, and/or plant-based proteins.

Whether you’re concerned about your risk of breast cancer or any other type of pervasive illness, certainly the best preventative advice may be to adhere to a clean, Mediterranean–style diet. To learn more about healthy foods and diets, check out www.GetThrive.com

New Device May Test For Cancer In 10 Minutes

A new portable device has been created, which can cut out the lab “middle man.” Diseases, viruses, and cancer may one day (not too far away) be detectable within a few short minutes.

Coming Soon to a Doctor Near You

Still, in its infantile stages, an easy-to-use, portable piece of medical equipment may soon be used in your very own doctor’s office. Researchers at UCLA have created a test that can check for disease biomarkers. Used in conjunction with each other, the device, plus the test should be able to detect potentially serious illnesses within minutes.

Currently, blood, saliva, and urine tests already exist that can send up warning flags for infection or illness. Those tests, however, require several steps to get results; those results are sometimes not available for hours, days, or weeks. (They’re also difficult to use.) This new UCLA technique cuts out complicated steps, time, and cost.

Benefit to Public Health

If this technique takes off, it can have a huge impact on public health overall. Reporting to patients, doctors, and public health facilities in a speedy manner can affect early treatment intervention. Also, when it comes to widespread disease or epidemics, up-to-date reporting is crucial.

The test was conducted using streptavidin, a protein used commonly to test diagnostic experiments, and also a protein associated with influenza. Their technique worked beautifully and was able to detect the flu virus in minutes. More sophisticated blood samples will require further research to adapt this method. But, the groundwork has now been laid for other viruses and illnesses to be detected—just as quickly and simply.

Zika, Ebola, Cancer

With the continuing widespread of contagious diseases like Zika and Ebola, it’s essential that public health and medical officials receive prompt updates of new cases. It’s important for practitioners to get results as quickly as possible so as to treat the patient accordingly.

Additionally, a person with a contagious illness can keep the disease from spreading if he/she is alerted as soon as the test reveals positive for the strain. The Zika virus is transmittable through sexual intercourse. Because Zika often shows no symptoms, those carrying the virus do not know their status.

It is highly recommended that anyone in a Zika-mosquito-infested area gets tested, especially women who are pregnant or plan to be in the near future. Men also need to get tested as they can transmit the virus just as easily and without knowing.

The UCLA team plans to continue its research and development on their method of combining biomarker detection and the portable fluid-filter device. As the technique becomes more perfected, it will eventually enable doctors to read test results in less time than it takes to get a coffee at Starbucks. Those results will also be able to detect viruses like Zika and potentially killer diseases like cancer. Science can be great.

Running from Cancer, Did You Know that you can Significantly Reduce Your Risk of Getting 13 Types of Cancer?

Are you getting at least an hour each day of physical activity? How about 30 minutes of moderate-level activity five days a week? Or at least 20 minutes of intense workout three days a week? If yes, congratulations! If no, then you are not meeting the recommended minimum weekly exercise requirements—just like more than half of the American population.

Exercise boasts results such as: mood improvement, weight loss, hormone balancing, increased metabolism, clear skin, lower blood pressure, and the positive list goes on. But now, researchers have discovered that the more often you exercise, the less likely you are to develop 13 different types of cancer.

The National Cancer Institute conducted a study over the course of approximately 11 years. Researchers focused on 1.4 million participants, how much they exercised, and whether they had been stricken with some form of cancer over the duration of the study.

JAMA Internal Medicine recently published the findings: over 186,000 cases of 26 different types of cancer had evolved. Here’s the good news—the people who exercised more frequently had a lower risk of getting 13 of those recorded cancers from the study.

The greatest reduction of risk (in those who worked out a good amount of time and with moderate intensity) was in esophageal cancer. A person who exercises regularly has a 42% less chance of getting it than someone who doesn’t exercise enough.

Other types of cancer where the risk was lessened was: liver, lung, kidney, colon, bladder, and seven others—including breast cancer, which had a 10% reduction risk.

The study also concluded that even taking yoga classes or walking quickly counted as forms of exercise. As mentioned, the researchers remained focused on physical activity as a possible deterrent to certain forms of cancer. Whether the participants smoked, drank, or engaged in unhealthy eating habits were not factors regarded in this particular trial.

The Centers for Disease Control want to remind the public that although 150 minutes of exercise per week may sound like a lot, it’s closely equivalent to the amount of time spent watching a movie or an evening of television. And, the upside is that workout time can be spread throughout the week (as long as some vigorous movement occurs at least three times or more.) Move with energy, stay healthy.
